If we’ve missed someone or you find an error in our reporting, please let us know at obituaries are organized alphabetically by last name. Sometimes we don’t hear about a death, particularly when it is of a widowed partner. The Board decided to post only the deaths of our own members (ministers or partners), except that we will report via a brief announcement on the death of a minister who was 65 or older, whether or not a member, and invite the surviving partner to join UURMaPA. The more complete obituary may take several months to prepare. Our volunteer obituary writers attempt to contact family members and friends as they research and prepare a thoughtful remembrance. We post the notice of a death as soon as we are aware of it, along with brief biographical information. Over the years since the inception of UURMaPA, we’ve moved from a simple one- or two-line death notice to a brief paragraph and more recently to more extensive obituaries. UURMaPA maintains an archive of their obituaries. Our spring 2021 conference included this slide presentation of the members who were memorialized. Our memories of those who have gone before us inform our lives in many ways.Įach time we gather for a conference, we include a memorial service honoring members who have died since the last time we met. Global warming and I are not the best of friends. My current concern is that I may soon become a distant memory a depiction found only in pictures of yesteryear. I cost nothing to build – requiring only creativity and energy.I’m a reflection of the times a modern artistic expression unique.I am an art form Michelangelo sculpted snow figures in 1494 Florence, Italy.Average number of snowflakes required in my creation: 10 thousand.Creating me provides a great aerobic workout, burning calories and losing weight while doing so.It seems that society wanted a wholesome image of me, for the sake of the children a presence that was family orientated and innocent. Welcome guests in whimsical style with these warm greetings Painted snowman metal, shaped signs feature a twine loop for hanging 12 x 14 tall each. With an improved image – nicer scarves and a silk top hat – I helped sell everything: tuna, insurance, even Cadillacs. It was also advertising that had much to do with my new persona. It was Gene Autry who brought my character to life in the Christmas song of the same name. The Frosty the Snowman song that we all know and love debuted in 1949. Imagine being bombarded by snowballs all in an effort to score points, or being plowed over by sleds into a state of nothingness. Being the ‘snow man’ target was a favourite past-time for young children in the 19th century variation of the game, “Aunt Sally”. Oh the shame!Īside from the pictorial abuse, I was also physically abused. With the end of Prohibition in 1933, I had become something of a spokesman for most leading liquor companies as well as personal hygiene problems ads-bad breath, gas and yes hangovers. I was a pickled, skirt chasing lush a frozen W.C. An 1898 postcard has me carrying a couple bottles of champagne to an office party, already somewhat inebriated, and smoking a pipe.īy the early 1900’s my party animal instincts were out of control. The proof can be found in the popularity of postcards and magazines at the time with myself the winter subject. It was then that I succumbed to the bottle and smoking. I took it all in stride, as best I could, until the late 1800’s. Our sexually explicit and politically fueled retaliation expressed anger toward the church and local government. In fact, in 1511, the city of Brussels was inundated with many of my kind an iconic presence that though silent, spoke volumes. Unless of course we meet, unexpectedly, on a cold winter evening and you’ve partaken in too much holiday cheer! In fact, you won’t hear a murmur out of me. He was torn between the desire to proclaim the existence of his secret life and the need to conceal it. He was a husband and a father, a poet and a playwright, a wit and a dandy, and a lover of young men. As time went by, he not only surrendered to these sexual feelings, but embraced them, and eventually became a brave champion of ‘the Love that dare not speak its name’.įor years, Oscar had a secret sexual and emotional life. Like many men of his time, Oscar struggled long and hard against his overwhelming sexual feelings for young men, before he decided to surrender to them. Most accounts of Oscar’s life present him as predominantly heterosexual, a man whose later love of men was at best some sort of aberration, a temporary madness and, at worst, a slow-growing cancer, a terrible sexual addiction which slowly destroyed his mind and his body.īut the truth, as Oscar famously remarked, is rarely pure and never simple. It was a journey of self-discovery with more than its fair share of love and lust, joy and despair, comedy and tragedy.ĭespite many excellent biographies and critical studies, comparatively little has been written about Oscar’s sexuality and his sexual behaviour. This biography sets out to tell that story, to chart Oscar’s odyssey to find his true sexual self, from the troubled and uncertain first stirrings of his feelings for other men, to the joyous paganism of his last years in exile. ‘Some day the truth will have to be known: not necessarily in my lifetime or in Douglas’s,’ he wrote shortly before his release from Reading Gaol. Oscar Wilde always knew that the story of his emotional and sexual life, and especially the story of his disastrous affair with Lord Alfred Douglas, would one day be told in full. The confluence of degrading economic conditions, civil unrest, uncertain long-term pandemic outcomes strike me as more likely to lead to technology-related harms and abuses than not, particularly as products rush to market with even less rigor applied to threat modeling, risk assessment, etc. This section opens with a number of broad statements from respondents about these concerns, followed by sets of assertions sorted under themed headings. Finally, they wonder who will take action to bring about the positive change necessary to tackle all of these obvious issues. Additionally, they worry about people’s mental health at a time of so much isolation. Some pointed out a variety of downsides to telework, and said they worry over the accelerating automation of more business systems and processes causing the number of available jobs for humans to shrink. Many warned that health-monitoring, work-surveillance and security solutions that may be applied will expand mass oversight, threaten human rights and lead more regions of the world to become more authoritarian. They maintain that the seemingly unstoppable flow of lies, disinformation and misinformation online is divisive, dangerous and destructive. They acknowledged that some of the likely remedies may interfere with civil liberties. Some argued that the spread of lies via social media and other digital platforms will damage social, political and economic systems. They noted that solutions to this problem have a double-edged quality because opportunity and challenge are equally present. Most respondents to this canvassing who discussed the problems tied to the business models of Big Tech said it is highly unlikely that there will be a successful movement soon to change market capitalism and the competitive imperative to make profit-making the primary priority. Much of their concern focuses on the growing power held by the technology companies that control information flows into people’s lives and their potential to compromise individuals’ privacy and autonomy. Their views embraced several overarching themes that can be summed up in one: The advantaged enjoy more advantages the disadvantaged fall further behind. (One of them remembers completing the game and getting a certificate from the Learning Company declaring him the 34 th person to finish.) Foote called his version DroidQuest, and it is the easiest way to play Robot Odyssey today.Whether they expressed optimistic or pessimistic views about the “new normal” in 2025, these respondents also weighed in with their worries for the near future of humans and digital technologies. Thomas Foote was so taken with the game that he spent years re-implementing the entire game in Java, with the support of a small but dedicated fan community. The tech law professor James Grimmelmann told me it had been his “game for a rainy decade,” describing an immense sense of accomplishment on finishing one of the nastier puzzles-“a big part of why I loved programming.” Programmer/musician/hacker Joan Touzet used it to teach programming to middle schoolers-in 2004. Game designer and hardware hacker Quinn Dunki of One Girl, One Laptop wrote Gate, a spiritual successor to Robot Odyssey that employed many of the same concepts. My younger brother, who suffered with my sister and me as we struggled through the game, told me, “It’s where I started on the road to becoming a programmer.” Even if players got stuck (and everyone got stuck), the game offered ideas and concepts that no other game did. The game had a profound effect on those who played it. Programmer Thomas Foote had just started college when he picked up the game: “I swore to myself,” he told me, “that as God is my witness, I would finish this game before I finished college. The challenge of the game-and it was one serious challenge-was to understand that other world. The world it presented was like being exposed to Plato’s forms, a secret, nonphysical realm of pure ideas and logic. It is the game I love (and despise) the most, because it was the hardest, the most complex, the most challenging. It is the game I remember most from my childhood. Visionary, absurdly difficult games such as this gain cult followings. It is also a stunning technical achievement, and one of the most innovative games of the Apple IIe era. Robot Odyssey is the hardest damn “educational” game ever made. Hell, any adult who can complete this game should go into engineering. Let me say: Any kid who completes this game while still a kid (I know only one, who also is one of the smartest programmers I’ve ever met) is guaranteed a career as a software engineer.
After a time colors began to be added by hand and then, as woodblock printing became the primary form of commercial printing in Japan, printers began to carve blocks for each color. Woodblock printing was brought to Japan in the 8th century by Buddhists from China and was first used to reproduce religious texts. For more information about the techniques of moku hanga, see and barenforum.Moku hanga is the Japanese term for woodblock print ( moku means wood and hanga means print). For a more extensive list from M.I.T., go here Zokin: A small wooden block covered with cloth primarily used to print bokashis.Washi: traditional Japanese paper made from the bast fibers of the mulberry plant.Ukiyo-e: Literally, "floating pictures" referring to 17th>mid/late 19th century prints depicting secular subjects.Tokibo: or hakobi a small brush used to apply pigment to the block.A movement that became popular during post WWII Japan. Sosaku-hanga: "self-prints"- prints that are designed, carved, and printed by the artist.Shina: Japanese basswood or lindenwood often used as easily-carved woodblocks.Shin-hanga:"new prints"- refers 20th century woodblock printmaking revival often featuring layered color landscapes.Sakura: Japanese cherry often used for woodblocks.Ōban: a print size about 15½ by 10½ inches (39 by 26.5 cm).Nori: Paste to keep pigment in suspension made of rice, potato or tapioca.Nishiki-e: Multi-coloured woodblock printing.Moku hanga:Japanese for woodblock prints.Ita-bokashi: "block shading" a technique for producing gradation achieved by sanding or abrading the edges of the carving.Hanshita: The drawings used as a guide to later carving.Keyblock: Roughly, line blocks often containing color.Chūban: a print size about 7 by 10 inches (18 by 25 cm).Bokashi: A graduated color impression often seen in traditional ukiyo-e print backgrounds.Beta ban: A flat, consistent color block.Baren-suji: Impression marks made with a baren- intentional or not.Baren: The traditional printmaking "pad" that is used by manually pressing the inked block.Hanga bake have long handles, maru (round) bake resemble shoe brushes. Bake(hanga or maru): traditional Japanese printing brushes made of horse or hog hair. I’ve noticed that this reconstituting doesn’t work as well with commercial tube watercolors since there is gum added and it results in a grainy texture. I’m also not quite sure that the step of pushing the pigment through the sieve is necessary since the ground particles are much finer than the screen.Īfter printing, mixing bowls are left to dry around the printing desks and are reconstituted (unless starch paste had been added) by simply adding a little water and stirring with the tokibo without apparent problems. I was a little suprised at the Ultramarine since it is a mineral pigment. I suspect that this will result in less hard-won pigment being lost and may go a bit faster.Īs of several days later, both the Ultramarine and the Indigo did not separate to clear water. Mokuhankan is planning to compare this traditional method of grinding pigments with using a western-style glass muller/ glass slab combination. The idea of keeping a selection of pigments stored in ‘paste’ form in an alcohol/water mix is discussed in ‘One-Point Lesson’ #6 in another section of the Encyclopedia.

LDAP directories differ in the LDAP attribute used to identify a User object. The value of this attribute must be unique.ĭuring Filr login, Filr uses this attribute to locate the user in the LDAP directory and then tries to authenticate as that user. Used as the Filr user name when the user is first provisioned from LDAP. For example, the cn attribute cannot be used because it is not a binary attribute. Before you do this, ensure that the attribute that you use is a binary attribute. If you want to map users to a different attribute, select Other in the drop-down list, specify the name of the LDAP attribute, then click OK. If William changes his name to Bill, and you make that change in the LDAP directory, Filr creates a new user named Bill Jones. If this attribute is not set and you rename or move a user in the LDAP directory, Filr assumes that the new name (or the new location of the same name) represents a new user, not a modified user, and creates a new Filr user.įor example, suppose you have a Filr user named William Jones. It ensures that Filr modifies the existing user instead of creating a new user when the user is renamed or moved in the LDAP directory. This attribute always has a unique value that does not change when you rename or move a user in the LDAP directory. For Active Directory, this value is objectGUID. Depending on the directory type that you chose, this field is populated with the name of the LDAP attribute that uniquely identifies a user or group. |
